Making an Informed Decision
We understand how difficult it is to make decisions that affect the life of your loved one. Choosing the right environment and the right care can help put your mind at ease. Here are some helpful steps that can aid in choosing the right nursing home for your loved one.
What to Expect From a Nursing Home.
Nursing homes, sometimes called skilled nursing facilities, help provide care to people who can no longer care for themselves at home. A wide range of nursing, rehabilitative, social and medical services are delivered on a 24-hour basis. These facilities are designed to provide necessary nursing and medical intervention while promoting the restoration of a person’s maximum independence.
When Visiting a Nursing Home:
1. Ask Questions
Is the Provider certified, licensed or accredited? What are the credentials of the staff? Is there available literature explaining the details of services?
2. Be Observant
Does staff treat patients with warmth and respect? Do patients seem engaged? What kind of activities do you see? Is there socialization taking place?
3. Find out about Special Services
Do they offer special services such as: Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Speech Therapy? Will they accommodate special dietary needs?
